Tuckaleechee Caverns Ride 2018
(August 28, 2018)
On Tuesday we took a road trip to the
Tuckaleechee Caverns in Townsend, TN. The caverns first opened to the
public in 1931 but closed because of the depression. The caves were
then reopened in 1953 by W.E. "Bill" Vananda and Harry Myers after years
of work to build steps and passageways.
The caverns are carved inside the earth's oldest
mountain chain and estimated to be between twenty to thirty million
years old. At one end of the tour you will find the "BigRoom" that is
more than 400 feet long, 300 feet across, and 150 feet deep and could
almost fit a football stadium inside it. The Big Room has stalagmites up
to 24 feet high.
On the other half of the tour you get to view "SilverFalls". It falls
210 feet from top to bottom and is the tallest subterranean waterfall in
the Eastern US . Millions of formations are viewed along the 1.25 mile
round trip adventure.
